It's been a while for me too, but my nostalgia for 2nd gen is so strong that I find myself remembering more of it than I thought I would. I'm sure they'd be a lot more willing to do it if Linux actually supported DirectX. Of course, there's a very obvious reason why it doesn't. Hopefully the Steam Box will significantly expand the Linux gaming library.Don't have to worry about Windows 8, it will destroy itself. But Linux has SDL which supplies almost everything that DirectX does.
