I've been having a lot of fun double battling in soulsilver, then I read about triple battles in gen 5 and got an idea
Looking at the triple battle rules you could probably make it work all the way up to 6 pokemon on the field. p3d itself may not find a use for it, but if the system were general enough to scale up to 6 on 6 pokemon fights mods could use it. i don't know how well 6 on 6 would work but it'd be interesting what people could do with it.
like, it seems you could make all kinds of jrpgs with a pokemon engine. just something to keep in mind when double and triple battles are implemented. the rules stay consistent in single, double and double battles, its just that once you get past double battles adjacency comes into play, but that too is a mechanic that can scale all the way to 6 pokemon.
i feel like it could be set up in a way where the code can take a battle that has 1-6 pokemon a side, and the game would have to space the sprites apart and zoom the camera out enough to reasonably accomodate all the pokemon on the field. so in implementing double and triple battles it also allows battles all the way to 6 in case a mod uses that. it'd be of limited use but it'd kinda just come for free if that scenario is kept in mind from the outset
