I'm sure they'd be a lot more willing to do it if Linux actually supported DirectX. Of course, there's a very obvious reason why it doesn't. Hopefully the Steam Box will significantly expand the Linux gaming library.
But Linux has SDL which supplies almost everything that DirectX does. In fact, SDL was made in order to port DirectX games to Linux (citation needed).
The problem is that the programs make a call for DirectX specific functions. One would have to make an exact copy of DirectX for standard software to be able to recognize it.

It's about the internal programming not whether to programs can do the same thing

I know... That's why it takes a very long time to port games. It must be rewritten for the most part.

And with weekly updates, even if Nilllzz was to make the game open source and someone was able to port it perfectly without adding any bugs, we'd always be pretty behind on updates.
