Auto Save

My suggestion is to have an auto save, I remember wanting this with the gameboy version. Basically if it is on, I shouldn't have to go to the menu and save, if I turn off my game at any random point, it acts like I saved right before the game was turned off, maybe something along the lines of, if an pokemon gains exp, game event is triggered, item obtained ect. then save game, but save it in the background without me noticing.

I see they are suggested, but I would highly support native linux program, I was unable to get it working on wine. Linux is my main OS and the linux community is no doubt used to less than stunning graphics, its all about gameplay for us, I'm sure the support you would receive if it made it on the ubuntu software center would be astronomical, I mean who doesn't love pokemon.

Also already suggested, but free movement would be really nice, I understand why the character moves the way it does, but it seems really awkward in a first person view.

I do have to say this is an awesome project, I only played red blue and yellow and never got into the later versions. I was relieved when I saw all the pokemon were ones I knew. I was surprised I even remember bulbasuar supposed to be getting leech seed at lvl 7 (which he didn't btw lol). I still don't know the maps but hey I can learn. Thanks for the work so far, looking forward to the future updates.

Autosave: I don't like the idea, autosaving all the time makes the game very laggy
Plus, one always save the game before the fight with a legendary pokemon to ensure the catching

I want too a free movement system, but its complicated :/

maybe something along the lines of, if an pokemon gains exp, game event is triggered, item obtained ect. etc.
I think entering / leaving the pokecenter would make the most sense. If anything, I think autosave should only be implemented with a toggle on/off for people who want the more traditional Pokemon gameplay style.

I understand why the character moves the way it does, but it seems really awkward in a first person view.
I agree that it is awkward but again it follows the traditional Pokemon style.

There are only three moves so far. Definitely something that needs to be changed soon ;)

So yeah welcome!

This isn't very easy with the way saves are right now, but it could work. Each save folder could have an auto save folder that gets saved to at certain checkpoints like the pokemon center or entering an important place etc. When the player loads they could choose between the auto save or the last manual save. manual saving in this game can be important because sometimes you want to go all the way back to where you last saved because you messed something up. But if you had an auto save thats past your manual save but before you messed up that would be really useful too.

You can't have it just saving as you go to your actual save file, you'd have it auto save at bad times.

Also, in pokemon 3d the saves are just text files, as a result it saves a game really fast, having the game auto save wouldn't interrupt gameplay like it does on the gameboy.

Yea I figured it would be a toggle on off thing. But you could set up triggers at certain points in the game, such as leaving pokemon center or w/e, maybe even go more advanced and allow players to select different triggers to auto save. Catch a pokemon, pass into another area, ect. and give me checkboxes to click on or off.

If your system can't handle it, turn it off, problem solved.

good to see free movement will most likely be added.

Autosave would be useful at times. Perhaps autosaving could occur every ten minutes or so but it does not overwrite your previous file and creates a new one. The user could still overwrite the original file when they have reached a point at which the wish to save previous to an engagement or when they are quitting the game. If the game freezes, the computer loses power, etc. the autosave file will still be there but the player does not have to use it.

As long as there's no lag (nice to know Dracohouston, I keep forgetting about the ridiculous save times), and you can only load from the last autosave/checkpoint when you continue, it's fine with me... Even better would be the ability to turn it off.

I don't like it when saves seem to "pile up" in my computer. Really, Skyrim here has 250+ SEPERATE manual save files because I can't stand the question "what if I mess up, get stuck in a wall and I only have one save?". I'm such a hoarder really :p

Also.. I find the diagonal movement fairly nice to use, it doesn't make me wish there was a free-movement system. And we would have less complications to deal with.

I wouldn't like to autosave. Usually I save for a specific reason (before a battle or other important event) and I don't need that automated where it could accidentally save where I don't want it to.

Are some people getting lazy now? ;)

then you are free to turn it off, and some people just forget to save, why involve more time redoing something? There is more than pokemon going on in my life. Its actually the opposite of lazy :)

Yeah this is why it can't replace manual saving, but there is room to include it in along side manual saving, IMO. 1-3 auto saves per character and 1 manual save would be cool

For Deus Ex they used a save file format that was basically every map you'd been to, so it saved stuff across maps (unreal engine (1 2 AND 3), to this very day, has no out of the box 'save game' function. what the hell tim sweeney.) and it was seriously like 70 megs a save by the time you were near the end.

What if you knock out a rare or legendary by accident and it auto saves.... .... not a good idea if you ask me...

If a clean system for ^this is developed, I would suggest 3-5 autosaves and 1 manual save per file.

Personally I think A backup auto save would work out better then just a normal auto save. Like if you accidently deleted your character. you can open up your backup and keep going without wasting time.
