Don't forget that generation 5 had a bit of this aswell. Like when you helped Cheren look for team plasma in b2/w2 aswell as when when N followed you through the ruins of his castle and your rival followed you in the beginning of the game (Even though there were no battles there)

All of those seems to be outdated. I don't know if that's the reason it doesn't work, but it could be a factor to it.
