Well...there isn't a direct method to measure friendship, the only way is to talk to your pokemon many times, if it says "suddenly hugged you" then it is close to evolving.

I just wish he wasnt so fragile so i could actually train him, Ive used berries and now hes gonna be gimped, im trying to get another one using a friend ball

If it is a male one, you can breed it with any compatible female pokemon that was caught with a friend ball, the pokeball of the mother passes on via breeding.
