None of them can find the host, we play Age of Empires 2 and have no problem connecting to eachother on that,

Maybe the lan ip is wrong in the properties.dat file.
Try open cmd.exe
Type ipconfig
Get the ip from there and try it out.

The IP in the properties.dat is 192.168.0.4, the port is 15124...
I'm gonna assume that this is a lost cause and I should just stop trying right? :/

It work for me when I create a lan server and public server. Everyone has its own problem which is hard to isolate each case.
Well, if the 4 computers are connected to the internet, you could try making a WAN server

Maybe you can make the server public (Port Forwarding), but manipulate your blacklist/whitelist so that only your LAN connecting computers can join.

I don't think I can portfoward as they are just connected to a LAN hub and not the internet
