Friend Can't Join My Server, Help?

So, my friend is trying to join my server that I downloaded from the page, and is in the right version, but he can't join the server. Could anyone help me out here? He says it "Can't reach server". I am able to join just fine however. Any ideas for what I should do?

Did you port forward?

How exactly are your computers connected?
I think you should clarify this before we can really help you. Are you in the same local network?

Nope, we're in different places, like if you were join most Minecraft servers.(Yes, I used Minecraft as a reference.)
