Fixed TorbenC's Bug Fix Pack #2 Route 30 - Violet City

TorbenC

Trainer
Hello, this is Torben Carrington again with 66 more bug fixes. These were created for version 0.39.

I wanted to alert you, there is a new format for the bug fixes in the changelog. This format helps to easily note each fix because most of the time a single bug fix listed in the old model can contain somewhere between 2-6 bug fixes. The format now has sections called "Bug Fix Set" and each bug fix set contains a list of the bugs fixed for those files. Each bug fix in these sets is denoted with asterisks.

This allows me to easily show the amount of bug fixes done as the old numbering system really doesn't do these Bug Fix Packs justice. For instance, there are only 28 bug fix sets listed in this Bug Fix Pack, previously that would have been considered the number of bug fixes involved... which is incorrect. In reality there are 66 bug fixes, now you can see this by simply counting the asterisks.

In this Bug Fix Pack I have added in around 6 missing NPCs complete with dialogue, I have corrected the dialogue of a multitude of other NPCs and added in missing dialogue trees for them, I have corrected the dialogue of most Pokemon battles with trainers from route 30 through Violet City's sprout tower and gym, and last but not least I have corrected the few scripted events within these areas (the teacher finally spins and talks silly!).

This Bug Fix Pack is pretty dialogue intensive as you will see. I hope you enjoy it (and I hope it gets added to the release soon), please leave some feedback as I really enjoy reading it, both bad and good. With 66 bug fixes in this Bug Fix Pack which was made in only 2 days, I know I'm getting faster at this.

Here is the "default" information on installing and understanding the whole Bug Fix Pack system:
Each Bug Fix Pack will have an archive attached at the bottom of the post containing all of the bug fixes I've done that time around, simply extract the contents into Pokemon3D's root directory (the directory with the Pokemon3D launcher) and merge/replace older files with the new contents. There will also be a changelog in the threads, listing each bug I fixed with that Bug Fix Pack (I won't include it with the archive so as not to irritate people by cluttering their Pokemon folders).

The changelog works like this:
Bug Fix Set) filedirectory\editedfile.dat && anotherdirectory\anotherfile.dat:
* Each fix in these files is denoted by a separate "*". But sometimes the fix spans multiple lines, if this
- happens a continuation of the previous line is denoted with a "-". Like this.
* This would be another fix for the files listed.

There are also two tags, NEW and DELETED. This would mean the file directly after the tag is either newly added to the game (NEW), or that this Bug Fix Pack cuts out support for (DELETED) the file (meaning you can delete it from your Pokemon folders). Some bug fixes may be content additions, such as missing NPCs from the game. And one more thing to note, all directories listed in a bug fix start in the Pokemon\Scripts folder.

These are just a few guidelines I'll follow to keep everything nice and orderly. Each bug fix set will list the files it edited, but each file may be edited by multiple bug fix sets, keep this in mind. If this occurs, know that bug fix sets are ordered in application, meaning, the first bug fix set is applied to the files edited before the second bug fix set that edits those same files. Line numbers will not be provided as it is far to much work when another bug fix edits the same file and the line numbers get screwed with.

*wipes sweat* Alright! Now that this is all out of the way, I'm going to try and release a new Bug Fix Pack once every 1-2 weeks (quicker if I get on the team, but for now it's just for fun). Due to limited internet access for the moment I cannot tell if some bugs I am fixing have already been fixed for the future version, but the hope is that at least the majority of them will be new bug fixes. Why do this? I love the game and want to help out Nilllzz with finishing this masterpiece... and build a little portfolio of sorts at the same time, win win!

The goal here is to patch up the cogs of early development releases of this fantastic game, Nilllzz doesn't have time to go through and fix these minute details of the game, and by me doing this I hope that this will offer Nilllzz more time to work on more important aspects of the game like new maps, game engine features, and more... or take a break, either way is a win.

Below the changelog I have normally will add a list of wanted/needed script instructions to be implemented. These instructions range from minor conveniences to important functions to help match original gameplay. This is for Nilllzz to mull over and hopefully implement some if not all of them, so for the general users who don't have access to the source code, feel free to skip over it or post in agreement or disagreement with the suggestions.

Without further ado, here is the changelog for the new Bug Fix Pack:

Engine Feature Suggestions:

#1) Run Scripts via OutroMessage:
This is purely a convenience feature but I figured I'd suggest it to see if it gets implemented before fixing trainers that have conditional dialogue post-battle. Some NPCs will have an OutroMessage that they say, but then add onto it if certain conditions are met (such as not having that NPC's phone number in the case of Bug Catcher Wade on Route 31). It would be great if we could have the OutroMessage as usual, but then an escape key to run a particular script for the extra dialogue.
Something such as "That was a great battle [SCRIPT]trainers\route30\wade" which would, upon talking to the NPC after the battle say "That was a great battle" then run the script trainers\route30\wade.dat.

#2) @NPC.spin(int) and @Player.spin(int):
This is purely a convenience feature, it would be great to be able to use these functions to make the player spin around a certain number of times and stop facing the direction they started in. This idea came up when creating the violey\school_teacher.dat and re-writing the violet\teacher.dat scripts.
The integer would be a positive number for clockwise spinning and negative for counter-clockwise spinning, the number given is the amount of full spins the actor will do before stopping.

Pokemon3D isn't meant to be a direct copy of the original games, so most of these aren't actually bugs. We really appreciate the work you're doing, but a lot of these were already known or intentional. We're most interested in bugs such as crashes, players or npcs that walk through walls, items not being given, etc. Serious typos and grammatical issues are also important. For reporting typos and grammatical issues, we'd appreciate a screenshot, what the text should be, and where the problem is in the file.

For other script errors, it would be extremely helpful if you could tell us the line number and what the command should be.

Also, thank you for your temporary fixes, we're sure that a lot of other members appreciate them a lot.

I was unaware the goal was not to be a remake of Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal versions in their exact forms, but even so, most of these are still bug fixes as most of these correct dialogue errors, add missing NPCs, and add missing dialogue trees to NPCs in the game which, even if the goal isn't an exact replica, should still be there.

Though these are your preferences (a screen shot, the correction *not by including a fix*, and a line number), these are pretty much twice if not three times the work required to do as opposed to actually just spear-heading the correction and doing it myself then uploading the files. At the very least at least other users will be able to enjoy the bug fixes before the next release, though by the way your talking about it, it seems like these bug fixes will not be included regardless of what they fix purely because you did not have the ability to fix them yourself by using screenshots and line numbers and such.

Again, as I said in my post, line numbers are very difficult to provide, and at the same time pointless considering the bug is fixed in my archive I provide.

I don't understand, are you irritated by me fixing these problems as opposed to you, are you just irritated that there are so many things I'm fixing, or what? It seems as though (since my first thread) you've had some kind of beef with me Darkfire and I don't understand what it is. Is it because I want to join the team? Is it your job to fix these bugs and you can't because your busy with real life right now so me coming and correcting them worries you? I just don't understand.

Please do respond back to this, because I am wondering what is wrong. I'm sorry if I offended you, though I don't believe I would have, but I am curious because I picked up this vibe from you a while ago but ignored it.

@Dastan and all the others:
Thank you for the support! Your likes and comments are very much welcome and appreciated.

Just glad that we are able to appreciate all these amazing fixes. I am almost 100% sure that you will become a Developer at some point. The only issue for you is the lack of internet I am sure you could be 4 times as helpful if you had it. But Please by all means keep up the great work :D I will be sure to use each fix.

I was seriously hoping you wouldnt take it the way you did b/c it is seriously not meant that way.
When we go to fix a bug we want to make sure all we do is fix the bug.
Aslo we cant just copy your files in really fast
It is faster for us to have a guide on what to fix than for you to give us a fixed version b/c then we have to go through the files, find your fixes, and then fix the files on our group server.
We are using Visual Studio's Team Foundation Server that allows us to have common files and share them between us.
It doesnt really allow for easy file replacement, and we would prefer not to just replace our files with your fixes.
Basically what I want is if you find a bug I want a guide on fixing it not a fixd copy of what ever it is
and dont find ANY bugs by comparing what happens in this game to the"real" games(missing NPCs, text, etc) since these arent bugs and we likely know that they are missing and have dismissed them.

Also a little hint- If you want to become staff then dont ask about it.
We bring people on staff when we need something they can do, and we dont make purely bug fixers "staff"(all people here are bug fixers, though some do a better job of it than others :p).
We do have need of a modeler since our other modelers have become too busy to continue so if you want to do that then let us know ;).

Again anything I say is not from any personal beef with you ;)

Thank you very much for the motivational post. I am currently going to take a break to see how everything pans out. If these don't get merged into the main game I may just put everything into one big pack and then release it as an "Unofficial Bug Fix Pack" type of thing.

Okay, thank you for clearing that up. I understand how source control works and now I understand your reasoning behind the problem with these bug fixes.

What you are asking for in regards to a guide on how to fix it is a little difficult though, but I do understand. I'm not sure if I can put out this kind of guide with ease though as it would literally take up many more hours, and considering what you said, I most likely won't be part of the team... assuming you guys have already discussed it.

Regardless though, considering this is now a volunteer project and not a "qualification" project like it was before, I'm most likely not going to be doing this type of guide work, if I had access to the file source control I would be basically doing what I am now, so it seems like this is undesired. Though I understand what it is you are asking for, it is simply to time expensive when I could simply release these bug fix packs for the community to use and if you guys wanted, to nit-pick through and implement.

Though, I would heavily prefer some credentials for fixing so many bugs in a news post if you implement one or all of these bug fix packs, I don't see this happening which does put a damper on my desire to continue this. It is quite time-consuming work as it is, so not getting any form of credit to put on a portfolio of sorts is slightly irking but I'll continue the project as a volunteer service I suppose.

I'll reformat and come out next time with a new thread that will contain all my fixes from here (meaning all past fixes in these Bug Fix Packs) on out for people to download and use alongside Pokemon3D. I feel this will benefit both me as I can get credit for my own work, and you guys as you have the ability to nit-pick through if you want and implement things. I think this is a good idea.

Unfortunately, as I told Nilllzz, I am unable to do any form of 3D modeling or texture work, I am currently restricted to purely coding and scripting with my skill set. As far as not asking goes, well... I figured I'd ask because that's the only way you're really going to get noticed for this kind of thing. What you suggest is kind of like looking for a job without asking for one. :p

If you dont want to do a "Guide" your more indepth bug reporting is good(we usually can find bugs on our own once we know what is wrong. Simply telling us where the problem is helps alot.

We do reward those who help us.
There is the "Trusted Support" tag which, while not a staff position, is our way of recognizing those we deem knowledgable about either how we want things done or how the scripts we use work(They get a section in the credits too :p)

I never really asked :p
Your "application" for any position here is providing content and fixes for us.
Every single person who made a GameMode has become web-staff or Kolben staff if they are still active on the site.
And they really never asked about it.
Seriously we are very good at recognizing that people like our project and want to help :p

also you are a beurocrat on the wiki.......
