Being able to play this at work would be great, but I can't install XNA or .NET 4.0 here.

Minecraft uses neither of these but I can use it here. As this is using the Minecraft engine, would it be possible to package all necessary files into the installation directory for a completely standalone client?

This does not use the minecraft engine nor is it using java which minecraft needs to run.
XNA and .NET 4.0 are not standalone capable and thus a portable Pokemon3D is highly unlikely

How did this game accomplish both controls and layout, not to mention the UI without porting the Minecraft engine?

Why is it that anything that looks blocky is considered a "minecraft engine"?

Anyway the engine Pokemon3D runs on is made from scratch in XNA Game Studio.
XNA Game studio uses libraries that provide the means to create any UI and Game u can think off.

It uses a completely different programming language then minecraft uses and isn't even related to minecraft

Am not sure why u think the UI looks like minecraft? i dont see the similarities.

Not that I'm any sort of expert, but where does this menu derive?

Also, the same key for 3rd person on Minecraft does the exact same in Pokemon3D in the same exact fashion.
The crosshairs are literally identical to Minecraft.

Not to make this into an entirely different discussion, I just wanted to see if it were possible to make this standalone.

That's ok i wasn't sure where u were going with this but in the case of the minecraft UI i guess it is just a matter of inspiration and convenience.

I can imagine if u played minecraft for a bit you could get used to the idea of having F5 for third person F3 for a debug menu and would incorporate it into your own game.

And on that note i now know why u thought this was build on the "minecraft engine" :)

These are just my opinions though as a programmer and gamer i can't speak for the actual creator which is Nilllzz

lol yeah, he likes mc.

we arent using any of the sort of tech mc used. this game is made in vb.net with the xna 4.0 framework. nilllzz is going for the minecraft look in the main game but its a conscious choice rather than a technical limitation. its purpose built for making a pokemon game and with a few more bells and whistles someone could port gen 5 or something in this. it is by no means a block-game style engine, and it certainly doesn't use any code from minecraft ;)
