Duplicate Red Gyarados staying red?

Just got done fighting the red gyarados and tottaly caught him with 2 hp left, his hp bar was soooo small, but was quickly dissapointed when i pulled him from the pc and he was not red anymore?

did you check the actual pokemon?
in the box the sprites wont be shiny

no, when he follows me he is not red, but he is in battles.
