First and foremost Welcome! I, as everyone on this forum knows, am SACooper95! Today, I will be talking to you about proper EV training. Disclaimer: The EV Training I will be explaining is the standards currently being used by Black2 and White2. Some standards may not be included in Pokemon3D yet.
So, you worked hard training that Level 100 Pikachu that you value so much? You expect it to destroy every water and flying type Pokemon on the field, right? Wrong!
Now, I'm sure you've seen gazillions of EV training guides out there. However, all of them are extremely difficult to follow and can make your head explode to the point of no return. Not a problem, though. I'll explain so in the end, ANYONE can be an EV Trainer.
A few things you're going to need are:
1) Eggs
2) Vitamins and other special items
3) Patients... and LOTS of it.
The first thing you need to do is to FORGET EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT STRATEGIC BATTLING.
"But I'm a Boss at Pokemon because I beat Trainer Red" Lol... No you're not. Let's get this straight right now. YOU... Will... Get... RAPED... at competitive battling without proper EV training. Period.
Knowing your Pokemon
A Pokemon, As you know, has 6 stats Max HP, Attack, Special Attack, Defense, Special Defense, and Speed. Before Black 2 and White 2 were released, Stats increases upon Leveling up. However with a major Overhaul done with the new game releases, Stat increases are done every time you engage in a battle. When you EV train a Pokemon, you want to be careful upon what enemy Pokemon your Pokemon KO. Everytime you KO a Pokemon, one of its stat is increased a tiny amount. (If you KO a machop, your Pokemon's Attack Stat will increase by 1 point, Whereas defeating a Cubone will increase your Pokemon defense stat by 1 point). For a list of knocking out which Pokemon will help which state. Visit http://pokemondb.net/ev/all (Keep in mind that for every 4 point you gain, your actual stat will increase by 1. EX: Charmander's ATT is 1 and he gets 8 ATT EV points. Charmander's ATT is now 3. To max out Charmander's ATT, you must defeat 1012 more Machops. Dont get intimidated, though!) .
Stats Defined
Max HP: How much HP your Pokemon can hold
Attack (ATT): Measure power of Attacks that make body contact like Tackle
Special Attack (SA): Measure Other Attacks like Confusion or Ice beam
Defense (DEF): How well your Pokemon can defend Physical Attacks
Special Defense (SD): How well your Pokemon can defend Other Attacks
Speed (SPD): Determines which moves will run first each move. Certain exceptions are special speed moves like Me First and ExtremeSpeed.
Keep in mind you CANNOT make it so stats are increased to "Over 9000". A pokemon can only have up to 255 points in each stat OR 510 stats total. (If you see a pokemon with 700 HP or any stat over 255, it's fake.) Some people use the 252 as the Magic number. Pick 3 stats you want to raise. Put 252 in one, 252 in another, and 6 in whatever your pokemon may need like HP or something.
Getting the right Pokemon
Everyone has their favorite Pokemon. Hey, even I enjoy Pikachu's Volt Tackle! However, Not every Pokemon is destined for greatness. Whether it's just a Pokemon with not-so-good states, or the Nature of the Pokemon doesn't take advantage of certain states, some Pokemon are just not made for battling.
For an example: A Skarmory has amazing DEF stats and decent Attack stats. However, Skarmory's SA is is weak. So you want to EV train a Skarmory's DEF as much as possible and maybe its ATT a bit so it can retaliate.
Their is one more thing! A Skarmory with Impish Nature will promote its DEF more and demote its already low SA. This would be the most ideal Skarmory.
EV Training time!
It's best to start EV training a pokemon when it's at a low level... So you got the Pokemon you want to EV train after so many eggs? Well, take that sweet, cute Riolu that you just hatch and... DRUG THE LIVING FU** OUT OF IT!
Yes, really. A Vitamin will increase a stat by 10. However, you are limited by how many you can use. When Riolu evolves into a Lucario it is a devistating sweeper in both Attack and Special Attack. Being a fighting type Pokemon though, Most Trainers take advantage of its ATT. (Most Fighting type moves are Physical.) So, my meathod was to use Protein until it could not take any more (Protein increase attack by 10 points.)
Then YOU GIVE THAT THING A VIRUS. Pokerus is a very rare dieses that actually benefits your Pokemon. It doubles the EV's that you get for each battle. If you can get access to the virus, make sure you spread it throughout your party and keep a few Magikarps in your PC. (Pokerus will double your EV's gain on a single Pokemon forever, but the contagious effects only last 24 hours. A Pokemon with Pokerus in a PC will keep its contagious effects indefinitely). Keep in mind that finding a Pokemon with Pokerus (PKRS) in the wild is 3 times harder to find than a shiny. Plus you need to KO the Pokemon to contract it. The best way to get a Pokemon with Pokerus is by trading.
When you have Pokerus, battling a Machop will give you 2 attacks stat points instead of 1. Which mean you only need to battle
Once (or if) your Pokemon acquires Pokerus, equip it with a EV enhancing item (For Lucario, give it a Macho Bracelet or a Power Bracer.) A Macho Bracelet works like Pokerus and doubles the amount of EV gained from each battle. A Power Bracer will increase the amount of EV's gained by each battle by 4. So, now battling that same Machop with your pokemon having PKRS and holding a Macho Braclet will give you 1 ATT stat increase per battle. If you were holding a Power Bracer, it would be 6 ATT stat increase per battle. If you happen to come across stronger pokemon like a Gallade (which usually gives you 3 ATT under normal circumstances.)
Gayrados: 2original x 2pokerus + 4 PowerBracer (or x 2Macho Bracelet) = 8 ATT per Battle! Or +2 ATT per battle
Gallade: 3original x 2pokeus x 2Macho Bracelet = 12 ATT EV points per Battle! Or +3 ATT per battle
As your pokemon gets stronger, its Stats that you want to increase will grow faster and faster. Providing more of an improvement per battle than a single vitamin dose. Other items that are not included in the Pokemon3D games yet also helps stat increase (Like wings).
The Moves make the Pokemon
Congratulations! you've just finished EV training your Pokemon. There is no better way to improve your Pokemon right? Eh, hehehe. WRONG! You now need to know about REAL strategic battling!
Lucario (LVL 100) Item: Life Orb
Moves:
-ExtremeSpeed
-SwordsDance
-Close Combat
-Ice Punch
Your Lucario is finally at that 319 ATT stat you've been working on. However, what's wrong with having a little boost? Swords Dance will increase your ATT by 2 ATT for each use. This gives you a 321 ATT and can mean alot between battling or not. Suppose I attach a Life orb (which takes 1/10 HP, but increase attack power 1.3x). 321 x 1.3 = 471. Hold on, though, using STAB moves falls in for another 1.5x of power giving us 625 ATT power. Add that to a powerful move like Close Combat and that's capable of OHKO almost any average pokemon without proper training! ExtremeSpeed is added there to make up for Lucario's lack of good speed. Ice Punch is to take down strong Dragon, Grass, and flying types that can weaken it. Note: the stronger your Pokemon is, the more power your items will have.
This method can be used with any Pokemon being that you handle it the right way. True, Lucario makes a nice sweeper (Attacker), but it's also good to have a few Walls (Defender), a Tank (A 1HKOer and usually a Special Defender), a Revenge Killer (A Pokemon with different types of special moves), And maybe other varieties of Sweeper. After all is set up, remember to keep type advantages at hand. (Dont use a fire type move to take down a water type Pokemon.)
I hope this guide sheds a little more light on EV training. If anyone has any questions, or wants to dedicate themself to EV training, feel free to ask me or anyone on the forum. You can also check out Smogon University ( http://www.smogon.com/bw/pokemon/ ) it's an amazing website that show which pokemon would be good in what situation and how it should be bred. It will also show you good moveset for each pokemon and give you the do's and donts. (Note: "Uber" Pokemon are usually ledgendaries and cant be used in competitive battling.)
Good luck, Trainers!
