Although they both are great pokemon, they still suffer from the dreaded water weakness. It is painful because the majority of pokemon are water types, and there are some very annoying water moves.

Water isn't really a very large factor on a steel monotype team, trying to work around that when there are so many other more relevent weaknesses to watch out for wont help much.

smiles because i haz all le piplups and shiny empoleons on my teamz
Steel is actually a tricky type to cover the weaknesses of, which is ironic given how many resistances it has. Given the hugely wide usage of the ground and fighting types using skarmory is pretty much a prerequisite, pretty much no steel types are neutral to ground and empoleon is the only available option to counter fire.

But with the common weaknesses it has, Magnemite + evos are the most resistant pokemon, with only 3 weaknesses, 11 resistances, and one immunity. Plus if you keep it with Magnet Rise, ground doesn't do anything to it, so it adds another immunity. It's only weaknesses are two uncommom types, fire and fighting, which aren't easy pokemon to come by often.

Fighting type attacks are one of the most commonly used in the game, magnet rise also has to take up a move slot and a turn to use before granting you protection. Given magnezones abyssmal 60 base speed you're going to end up in a situation where anytime you're going to predict using it you will need to survive a 4x or 6x earthquake before getting it up, and if you don't have to use it then you've just wasted a move slot.

That is why you don't send a steel type to face off a fighting, never. If you have nothing else, go at it with everything you've got and either just barely live or die proud.

We're talking about a steel monotype here, and it isn't fighting types that are commonly used, just fighting moves; it is much harder to counter when you don't see it coming till it hits you.

But with Magnezones very high defence and without a STAB fighting move, Magnezone has a chance of surviving a hit. Definately not 2, but it could survive 1. Because most fighting moves if not all are physical, it has a good chance of living with enough to hit with a move.
