Your friend have to give you something in return, just giving him the pokemon won't make it evolve. You are just gifting him the pokemon, not trading it for another one. (I am just assuming, but this can cause it to not evolve)Yep

You have to trade your pokemon for another pokemon.
If you just trade it without an request, then it won't evolve.
Example:
You trade a Seadra with a Dragon Scale for a Haunter
=> Both evolve
You trade a Seadra with a Dragon Scale for nothing
=> No Evolution
You trade a Seadra with a Dragon Scale for a rattata
=> Seadra evolves.

Actually no, only the Pokémon you take from a trade evolves, so when Player 1 sets up a trade (Seadra for Haunter), and Player 2 takes the Pokémon, the Seadra evolves. It automatically sends the Haunter to Player 1. But this again is not a trade, but a direct sending of a Pokémon, so if Player 1 receives Haunter, it doesn't evolve.
Yeah but that was a different system. Here, you can set up trades and wait for them to complete. In the original games by GameFreak, the trades are handled directly.
