When the Pokémon you're Surfing on comes into a water battle first, a duplicate sprite appears in battle, the one that's fighting and the one that's registered as you.

Ah sorry, I posted my topic as you were posting yours. Mine is sort of a duplicate of this topic.

Basically it seems like "ridden" Pokemon are being pulled into the battle as your trainer sprite. It happens with Pokemon you Ride (the replacement of Bike).
