As suggested in the IRC chat. I think you should be able to get all non-evolved pokemon as starter pokemon, as long as you've caught them in a previous save. E.g.

Save 1: catch rattata
New game: you can also pick up rattata as your starter pokemon (don't know why you'd want to)

It's one of the things I disliked the most about the original pokemon series and I hope it'll be implemented in this version.

Feedback?

I like it and I don't.

I like being able to start with the likes of Abra, but being able to start with Grass/Fire/Water is one of the key parts of Pokemon and like JShredz said, you will end up with alot when you have caught them all.

No. Let's keep it the way it's meant to be. Your rival is meant to have a better (type) Pokemon than you to start with so let's not complicate things.

I would like to start any pokemon. Except for evolved and lengendary pokemon of course.

It should not be hard to have a system where a pokemon strong against our started is selected by the rival. If we pick a fire, a water pokemon is selected by the rival. if we pick a flying type then an electric type can be selected by the rival.

Duel-types would work too if you did it like this: look at your choice's weaknesses and select a rival starter (randomly?). Or make a hash function to take in the dex number and pick a predetermined rival's that way. The rival must be challenging.

Also, I personally don't like the this (the OP's) suggestion. But good idea regardless.

So what happens when you pick a Sableye or Spiritomb?

You can't they can not evolve. Only the first evolution of Pokemon that can evolve can be picked.

impossible with the way scripting works currently :\ and as others have pointed out how would you manage it? I guess the player could be shown another character's pokedex and they pick 3, the game would then have to store those 3 pokedex numbers and a token could go in the scripts as a macro for starter pokemon 1, starter pokemon 2 etc. So instead of the script going show pokemon picture (4,0,1) or whatever for charmander you have @viewpokemonpicture:(starter1,0,1) etc

I don't know if I want selectable starters to be in the main game, but support for it could be interesting for mods.

A random 3 non evolved Pokemon could be shown.
That adds a whole lot of change, as well as a chance aspect to the game.
The Player could also have the option to start the game with original starters, or random starters, that way you could still play the game in it's originality.

I would like this, but then the rival might not get a pokemon that is 2* effective towards yours.
Maybe they could be 3 Random Fire/Water/Grass pokemon.
Or make some kind of code that spawns 3 pokemon that are effective against each other like the original ones.

I still don't like this idea. In the original games the starter Pokemon were preselected to make sure you trade with other people. So far Pokemon3D doesn't have any of that yet so the argument is more in your favour but I still don't think changing them is right.

They also mean the player starts at a known amount of power, which is good for tuning the fights early on, the designers knew what pokemon you would or would not have at that point and don't throw in things that would stomp your face in.

I mean, imagine starting with a Ghost typed Pokemon. Almost all Pokemon at the start only have a normal typed move...

The only Extra Starter Pokemon I would ever approve of are Eevee or Pikachu.
