3rd gen isn't really that bad...but it could've been better...while I do like the starter pokemon and the pokemon in it, alot of people say it's great. I don't mean it's horrible, but I do think it's a okay game.
The 2nd generation is definitely my favorite. Then first, then third. Fourth is meh. Never played fifth gen, never will. I sensed the decline in the fourth generation... it's not recovering anytime soon.
My favourite is 1st and 2nd, but I really enjoyed the cities, locations and music from generation 3, 4 and 5.
I think people tend to love the generation they feel the most nostalgia for, or the generation where they first felt immersion whilst playing.
I actually love 4th gen bascially because, it did bring out more specific types of which specific moves are special or physical on the type, not only that it brought out the day and night. It has a funny and annoying unforgettable rival especially in the anime where he keeps demanding for your money. I thought it was downright hilarious. I do like 2nd gen while 1st gen is quite alright(but basically I do know that if first gen haven't been discovered we wouldn't have this much gen pokemon and it's growing popularity) but I love 4th gen because it does involve abit of more 2nd gen mechanics and introduced 2nd gen with alot of things variety things you can do. 5th gen introduce seasons.(but I kindna wish they make more seasons on the grass type pokemon as well especially the older grass type and the concept reminds me..abit too much like animal crossing but hey animal crossing is nintendo.)
