If you save and quite game while surfing it does not save your Pokemon sprite to your character. The next time you log in you will be your trainer again standing in the middle of the ocean and still able to move about.

Also, if all of your Pokemon die and you get wiped out while surfing it will send you back to the pokemon center and you will still have the sprite of the pokemon you were surfing with; also, be able to move around as your pokemons sprite. Re-surfing with the same pokemon does not fix this, not sure if others will. To fix you must save and quit and reload.
