Well, it depends on what Pokemon it is, sometimes it relies on the size of the Pokemon, other times it's the egg group. You could get a baby Snorlax egg (Yes it is possible) and because of it's size, it will take well over 10000 steps.

I have an Eevee and a Dratini egg... Eeve like 9000 and dratini 10000 as Darkfire told me earlier... Got a lot of walking to do...

Btw, shinies have this little sparkle in their start animation when you find them, right? Some are fairly hard to distuinguish...

Depends on the Pokemon, if it's a Pika, then it will be a Darker Yellow, if it were a Charmander or something, easily distinguished due to being gold.
