Not a bug [0.31.1] Gym Teleportation

In the Ecruteak City Gym, I am able to battle the first trainer, but no matter where I go, if I walk past him, it will teleport me back to the beginning of the gym! I don't know what's happening, but I'm just wondering if it's happening to anyone else.

There's a specific path you have to follow. This puzzle is way easier to figure out in top down, but the pattern is simple enough when you figure it out.
