How do trading and gamemodes interact?

Can a player running a non-Kolben gamemode trade with 'vanilla' players? The way I see it if a player wants to hack a pokemon they already can, so trading with a 'cheat' gamemode with wild mewtwos and such wouldn't be much of a problem. But trading with players running mods like Hoenn, or 1YL for slightly different but still in my opinion 'legit' pokemon would be pretty cool.

Currently trading only works if you are both in the same game mode
so people playing the vanilla can only trade with people playing the vanilla

Wait, does that mean that two people running the same gamemode can still trade? If so that's pretty cool at least.

Sorry, I don't have any mods on this computer, apart from music packs. I'm assuming I would have to get all the way to Goldenrod to test it, right?
