My idea is that in the future we could possibly have Friends lists, and post our own servers to a list that everyone can view ingame.
Maybe there are two buttons on the main menu that we can choose "Single Player" or "Multi-Player", You could buy a VPS and host a Pokemon 3D main server on that so players may have the option to either join the Official Pokemon 3D server or join a Private game.
With the friends list you could view a server that your friend is on and join that server with the click of a button. Maybe if they don't want you to join they could disable joins.
You could have Private messages that are delivered by Pidgey's or Maybe Digglet. Trading, Battling or even a Battle Frontier like place where players are randomly matched with other players. (This wouldn't be somewhere you goto in-game of course, It would be an interface that you can choose options and change your Pokemon team without having to go into the game itself.
I realise that some things are too complicated or would cost too much but I really like the idea of a main server that everyone can connect to with the push of a button. Maybe on Private servers, players cant gain XP by defeating opponents to avoid farming. eg: A trainer could have an entire team of level 100 bellsprouts that only know growth, and the other player might be farming that player to train his Flying or Fire type Pokemon.

----- New Title Menu -----

----- After you click Multiplayer Menu -----

If you click 'Connect to Pokemon 3D' It will direct connect you to the Official Pokemon 3D server where all players can trade, battle etc.
Clicking 'Connect to IP' will bring up a screen that allows you to connect to someone else's server so players can have their own servers where they can play with just their friends.

----- After you click Tournament -----

After clicking 'Ranked match' it will randomly match you with a player who is also searching for a match and after the match it will add a win or loss to your rank and you will be moved up or down on the Leaderboard determined by how many wins or losses you have. We could also have the option for different types of battles eg: 2v2, 3v3, A game where you can only use 2 Pokemon instead of 6.

Clicking Unranked Match will pair you with a player also searching for an Unranked match and this wont affect your Wins/ losses.

I know a few of these ideas have already been suggested and some nilllzz has all ready said will be added.

I suggested an online pokemon league a while back but nilllzz said it would be too hard to do at this time, but may be done in the future. We did get talking about a form of a frontier, but against the AI with random peoples teams. it would take to long to explain at right now.

I do like the idea of 'Ranked' and 'Unranked' matches, it gives you more of an option if you are bad at the game :p.

Yeah unranked could help people who want to get used to fighting other players and learning strategies and not just NPC's

ya this has been suggested a ton of times, and i spent like an hour rambling on about NAT traversal and quick joining and cross game chat with him the other night. its deffo something to do eventually, but at this stage its not mission critical, y'know? consider this sort of thing in nilllzz to do list though. when the engine and game is more featured more support for coop is something that'll get a real good look at.

the best reason to have a master server for finding games and friends list etc IMO is all connections can do hole punching and relaying with it so no one will have to mess around with their router settings or use hamachi to play.

something like the world of warcraft pet battle system 'find battle' button would be great. that thing finds another party with the same total levels as yours and puts you in a battle with that player when you both accept the challenge. very slick. i havent done much with the NDS games wifi multiplayer but its probably not without precedent in the pokemon games lol

this is not an mmo but it would be wonderful if finding coop games, battles and getting back in touch with friends you make along the way are all supported ingame. things like tournaments would be sick too. there's so much we can do with online multiplayer when the basics are finally in place. right now i'd just like to be able to trade/battle with someone on the same coop server as you ;)

Very true. Is that something that is actually worked on atm or is it for the future?
not in 0.19 AFAIK. i know he added a little icon over your head when you're in a battle/talking to show the player's busy. and if you get into a wild pokemon battle etc you don't disappear from the map while thats on. it wasnt the only thing he did with coop but im pretty sure those 2 things aren't coming yet.

this updates focusing on pokemon mostly because nilllzz ended up rewriting how pokemon get their data for the species archetypes, which has let us make a data file for all gen 1 and 2 pokemon really quick. however, moves have not been worked on and they're all going to have overgrowth and tackle for a little longer :( also im pretty sure this map editor im working on is close to ready to ship, so 0.19 is going to be a great patch

Sounds promising, I'm looking forward to 0.19! Although I hope that the moves and trading/battles in co-op gets some more attention in future patches. It may sound stupid, but I personally feel that moves/battle animations are a big factor in what keeps the battles interesting.
