Professor Elm wont talk to me at the start of the game.

I do not know whats really going on my mom tells me he is looking for me I go to his lab and his helkper talks to me just fine but when I get halfway neer him a blank talk screen pulls up I waited about 5min and nothing I then walked up to him and tried talking nothing worked can any1 help?
