How to edit registers?

I was once told how to edit the info in register.dat so I can delete trainers and re battle them, but I cannot find the thread where I read how to do it. I was able to find and open the register.dat and locate the trainers so I can delete them, how ever I am not able to edit the file. I am using free file viewer to open it, but I can't edit. How am I able to edit and save changes to .dat files?

either use notepad or download notepad++(recomend)
these files are basically .txt files with a different name(dont know the differences of the extention so i might be very wrong on that but meh)

it seems that the trainers aren't activating a new battle after I delete them from the register. When I talk to them, they give the response as if they had lost. Am I missing a step or is it simply impossible to re-battle trainers?

did you 'load' the game or 'continue' the game
you need to load after any changes to the save file
