If it is possible and not too much work, I agree with the mediawiki thing.
the second option of just having the wiki not integrated into the main site is fairly effortless, but it'll need a bit of effort to skin to match the main site's skin. mediawiki is just a bunch of php you upload somewhere, do a little setup thing on 1 page (mostly to show it where your sql database is) and bam you have a wiki. we all make accounts there and daniel can give people like you admin privs.

the hosting provider i use for dracohouston.net has a thing in cpanel that gives you a load of different software to install and you find mediawiki and click install and put in some options and its all done for you. daniels host may have something similar
