In original pokemon some buildings, the high market ones, had an outside floor, the last one. It would be awesome if you make it being possible to see the map when on top of it. see the cities from top would be incredable.
Another visual suggestion is to make maps btw those that don`t have nothing imediatly next to it. Like the route in the image. If you make a map btw them, only a map all covered with trees it would creat a sensation of not being in the middle of nowhere.
