game loads, but when I click load game or continue, the window closes. the game does not clse when I click new game or quit.

Yes, I played the game when it was a 0.21, just downloaded the 0.23 version last night. It worked last night, but when I go to play now. The game crashes.

Hmm that may or may not be the problem. I don't know, the game launches but it won't open my current game.

Launcher only starts the game and updates files has nothing further to do with what is happening here.
To me it seems that one of the files in your save is corrupted or modified.

Try and start a new game create a different name, grab a starter pokémon and save.

Then try and load the save game and see if it crashes if not then it means your other save is corrupted.
If it does crash then something else is at hand.

If u could zip up your save folder and attach it to your reply then we could check and see if we can fix it.
The folder is located in Pokemon\Save\

If your game crashed see if it generates a log file inside the pokemon folder
