Heart scales were either a rare find on the Pokemon Luvdisc or were found in random places in the region like Rare Candies were.

I'm not suggesting using Heart Scales but something that is rare would be good for this sort of thing.

I'd rather it be really convenient, for multiplayer. Something to limit you so you don't do it like every single time you face a new trainer would be fine, but nothing too punishing

how about the "Trainer Exp Point" from the perks thread?
Just spitballing ideas here but Guild Wars 1 gave you a 'skill point' per level, and when you reached the level cap of 20 you kept leveling, and every time you would have leveled to 21 you get a skill point instead. Skill points bought skills, which you collected to make good builds. The best one were captured off bosses.

Regardless of how high/low the level cap is for trainers, if that is put in, points could be awarded for filling the xp bar again. If the points only bought move relearns you'd pool up a whole lot of them throughout play if you didn't use it much, but they could buy other things if you got a lot of them while playing.

That's not a bad idea, using skill points after reaching max level, but wouldn't do much for a Pokemon around level 50. I would consider using a normal pay with money aspect, amount changing depending on the Pokemon's level. For level 10, $1000, 50 would be $5000, and 100 would be $10000. Not 100% on those figures, just a quick suggestion, but it would still effectively limit the amount someone uses a Move Tutor/Relearner.
Another thing with Move Tutors, why don't we just nix TM's altogether and just have Move Tutors you can learn the attacks from for a price?

Here's a thought from the game I've been planning with a friend: Make the 4 move limit be a league rule. Pokemon keep all the moves they've learned but you can select which four you want to use in battle. I feel like it adds a lot of realism to the game. No more "Alakazam has an I.Q. of 5,000, but can only learn four moves. Which would you like to delete?"

that'd be really cool. even if it were just for battling other people. my preference would be to leave single player like it is in the pokemon games, with move unlearners/tutors for that, but maybe there could be a place you go to battle, like maybe in pokemon centers, where you are free to change moves in the check moves screen, and save builds for your pokemon (held item + move set) so if you have the pokemon and have learned that move on it you can do a build with that move in it. when you leave your pokemon is back to normal.

while pokemon isnt an mmo and this wont be one there are some lessons to be learned from MMO PvP, in particular a game that has a lot of parallels with pokemon, guild wars (1, not 2). in guild wars pvp you brought up to 8 people, who could be any combination of 2 classes, and pick any abilites from those 2 classes, up to 8, with only 1 'elite skill' allowed on your action bar at once. You couldn't just change the skills anywhere like you can in gw2, but if the team was back in a town (meaning they aren't playing yet, or just got done winning/losing) they could change their skills around. There was also a way to make a pvp only character that knew every move you had ever learned on your account, meaning they could change class composition quick too. you could also buy moves with points you earned from playing pvp that would learn the move on your account (but not give the move to all your characters in pve) there was also a game mode where you brought a team of 4 and the moves you could pick were randomly chosen from a pool, to force people to use other stuff.

not all of this can apply to p3d but i feel that having all your learned moves be usable (with a limit on how many you can take) is not without precedent. also that random pool of moves thing could be interesting as a league rule

Well that sounds kind of like the Pokemon Stadium games, which if possible, could be added further down the line as a seperate area accessible through boat in either Olivine or other port cities across Pokemon. Perhaps you could make your team and just "save" them like in those games, which still keeps true to the Pokemon series, especially since Gold/Silver and Pokemon Stadium 2 were made to work together, so it wouldn't even be that much of a stretch to the game.
Perhaps even make it so you can transfer the saved teams, allowing you to trade your team with other players and battle NPC versions of their teams as well. It's not the online multiplayer a lot of people want, but it might still be an idea to consider in the future.

iunno it just seems like something you wouldn't want to make too hard to use. even putting it in the pokemon center is probably too much, could just have it so you hit tab for the multiplayer menu and there's a list of connected players and you invite other players into the battle and it'd just go to a pokemon stadium like screen with party and all your boxes, you select 6 and when you select one you can set the moves freely from the ones you've learned, and all the items you have are in a pool of held items you can use, with the ability to save party setups you use a lot so you can pick it really fast. could put all the league rules stuff in there too. its 1 game so it doesnt need like pokemon stadium island where you plug your party into the gb tower and get your stuff out of your game

Well, saved party setups could also be added as a setup in Bills PC as well, although the move pool idea might get a bit tricky to work with, as well, wouldn't that inevitably defeat the purpose of having Tutors/Relearners? And what I meant earlier with the team-swapping, you will inevitably need to set that up anyways, if you want to stay true to G/S/C, since in Veridian, they had the Trainer House where you battled either Cal or someone you did Mystery Gift with, I assume Mystery Gift might not be easily possible (not sure, that's not for me to decide) but certainly having a means in which to swap your saved teams with another players saved teams to battle in the Trainer House might be a simpler solution to keeping it in the game as well.

why have it outside player vs player battles though? what i'm suggesting is when you're battling other people you can do it in the party select screen, not making it so your actual pokemon that you beat gyms with etc be able to change their moves around freely. that'd be really sick too, but it's probably too radical a change to be able to just drop it into the game without changing a lot of things. player vs player is another matter entirely though, in the gb/ds games you don't even get XP for battling

player battles should be easy to get going because they're just for fun, and a number on your trainer card. i just think its fertile ground for good quality of life features that don't disrupt the balance of the story part of the game

Oh, I see what you're saying now, so basically just in the PvP options... but from what I see, the co-op appears to be the only possible PvP enabled method, once it's implemented completely. Would it be arranged there that it allows you to select your team there in the field if challenged to a battle in co-op or are you thinking of other plans for some other PvP type battles in the future?

theres no concrete plans on anything yet, except that there will be battles, and trading.

my preference would be for battles to be able to be initiated anywhere, even if the players aren't in the same map, and you don't level from it and you have more freedom of options than you do normally. but who knows? nilllzz is project lead so i can't speak for him.

Yeah, well I certainly love the project and you guys are awesome. I love coming up with ideas, so hopefully I come up with something useful for you guys down the line ^.^ Just wish there was more I could offer, although I am looking at the mapping to hopefully fill in some of the holes in certain areas.
