Solved Sprite Transparency Issues

Help???
When I learned that you could customize your own character online in this program, I was ecstatic. I'm still super excited.
But whenever I try to upload the skin, it's either white/black like depending on what background I've used to try and make it transparent.
I've tried everything on my Paint.net program, but nothing seems to be working. There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere that will make the background transparent (or maybe I'm not looking hard enough, I don't know).
And no, I don't want to use Adobe PhotoShop, as it's being too tempermental. I tried using it, but because apparently it's a free-trial, it decided that everything should be in black and white. Also I'd rather not pay $50.00, or get fined for trying to get it illegally. Soooo, any other suggestions? Should I try finding an updated version of Paint maybe? I could survive on using the default skins, but I'd much rather use this one if possible.

Download paint.net from this link : http://www.getpaint.net/ (GIMP works too) and when editing the skin, use the "Magic wand" tool and click the white space then press "Delete".

Thank you so much! I was getting a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to customize my character, but you put all my doubts to rest. I'll finish up as soon as I can.
