Are Legendaries still special?

This is a post from another forum, but I thought it would be nice to bring it up here for discussion. With the sudden surplus of legends that Hoenn brought us, and that the generations following upheld, are legends truly legendary anymore?

My post:
When you have too many special things, it begins to feel more common and well...normal.
Legends seem to have a place more or less with the generation's region, therefore when a new region arrives we get more legends. It's kind of like Egyptian gods, for every element there was a god(or legend in this case) that controlled it.

Though some of them never really were explained, and with so many we forget they exist until somewhere along the lines we're slapped in the face with a movie or game that features them. (Jirachi who? Mana-what? No Deoxys love? Darkrai is a legendary? Suddenly Keldeo.)

Its true that the amount of Legendary Pokemon has shot up ion the last few games. And it is true that the more Legenday Pokemon that are out there are losing value due to the increasing number of them. But I don't entirly agree that Hoenn was excessive. Surely Hoenn's Legendary Pokemon Value is much higher than that of the Generations that came after it? Right? There were only 8 Legendary Pokemon in Hoenn (including the Regis), but the newest genreation might as well not even have Pokemon with "Legendary" status because of the sheer number of them.

Slightly, Gen IV had a million of them and the same with V. There were a lot in Gen III, I admit but they at least had some uniqueness to them. The legendary trios in the previous had always been water/ice, fire, and electricity which the Regis replaced with other types. Groudon, Kyogre, and Raquaza were different as well. I felt that they had a larger impact on the story then the legendaries had had on the storyline of previous games. I kinda liked the idea of Jirachi. It was different then the other legendaries, almost weak in some ways. I think Gen IV was the turning point. The things were everywhere and you could catch the first one after half the regular gameplay is completed, and if I remember correctly it wasn't much of a battle if you wanted to catch a Gen IV legendary. I remember the Hoenn legendaries putting up a huge fight and being very difficult to catch.

I'm not saying that the gens after Hoenn didn't have more legends, I'm saying that Hoenn started it. Gen 1 had 5 Pokemon, Gen 3 had 10. After that I believe the gens to follow decided it was best to follow Hoenn's example and have a ton of legends, even more than Hoenn itself.

I honestly think Gamefreak will be aware of legendaries getting old soon and that something else will come in place, kind of like the fusion of those black'n white dragons. They might just offer the possibility for the 3 birds of the first generation to fusion into some odd 3-colored bird with 3 types. :dead: No, that didn't sound realistic at all.
But I think the same goes for the amount of pokemons there are going to be released next. Professor Oak can't be serious if he wants us to go out there and catch 800 pokemon in Generation VI. Just maybe, generation 6 will allow you to import pokedex data from generation V just to complete it.

Whatever, my opinion is, I can hardly even imagine the numbers to increase linearly, they will either go down slowly or just disappear and make place for a new concept.

I do agree that the Hoenn started it and was a catalyst for future games, but could the fans be to blame? It seems as though there has always been a demand for more legendaries and in gen IV the developers caved in hoping to sell more copies.

I can agree to that, I think maybe we just loved seeing all the new designs of legends that we wanted more. Though I never really cared and liked the legends I liked, hated the ones I didn't, and forgot the ones that fell in the middle. And I think that's a big thing too, I know earlier how we were trying to remember all the legends in one generation and we just started forgetting all that was there.

I don't think it's the fact that more Legendary Pokemon have been introduced, it's the fact that you can go to the GTS and find them up for trade really easily. There are too many people trading away their Legendary Pokemon :/

Another thing is that Nintendo/Game Freak like to keep bringing back older Legendary Pokemon and stick them in the new games which is NOT ok with me.

I personally like having legends in the game. They are a personal challenge just like finishing the dex is. having more challenges is just nintendo's way of putting more content into the game and, in the case of the main legends, more story. The thing i don't like are legends that you have to trade and gather other pokemon to unlock(Regigigas and Landorus) having version exclusives is bad enough but if i want i can ignore them and move just catch what is in my game but if to catch all the pokemon in the game i have to bring in others......thats just mean

for me legendaries were about 2 things
-going on an adventure to get them
-having a strong pokemon

so more legendaries never bothered me. in fact, i'm hunting them down in hg/ss, i don't even use half of them i just like doing the quests for them etc. having 5 birds, 3 dogs, some floaty thing and some other one accessible in the game is great for me. i've clocked up so many hours and theres still stuff to hunt down.

it also really sucks every time i read about a legendary i can't get without trading because i wasnt playing when the events were on for it. yeah cool nintendo, im sure the people with celebis feel real special, but would it have killed you to put it in as post-trainer red content with the big quest to get the G/S ball from crystal version? i dont even want the celebi i just want to be able to do its quest. why wouldnt i? its a game and i wanna play it

download the rom and use the cheats (and since you own a copy of the game and a ds it is not illegal:D)
since i transferred everything up to white i have no way to get those things in the game so if i want to do the event i just use the rom

yeah but like i shouldnt have to

this was an issue blizzard had to come to terms with in world of warcraft, in the first place the content was too dang hard to get to, keys upon keys, resist sets, going all over the world on an Epic Quest to unlock everything, it was cool but the actual end boss of wow without expacks was fought by about 0.5% of the playerbase.

slowly over time they discovered that they could have exclusive stuff, time limited, hard to get, whatever, as long as its cosmetic no one will actually care if they can't get it.

why would they give out just legendaries over wifi, they should have more special skin ones. i know theyve had some but it seems way cooler than 'heres a ticket so you can catch ___'
