In my opinion sprites are okay, because they're part of the charm of the Pokémon games. And if you ask for 3D-Pokéballs, there should be 3D-plants, 3D-trashcans and so on and that's simply too much work for a single developer. Furthermore, more threedimensional objects might require an improved game engine and that would lead too far (I don't know very much about programming, but I think that it's not important to understand the actual issue I'm referring to ;) )

they're sprites because the pokeballs are just NPCs set up with a script to ask you if you want that pokemon. NPCs can only be sprites at the moment.

but... why? isn't it more nostalgic when the pokeballs are sprites? :)
Pokeballs and other objets in 3d with the real textures of gold and silver editions is the best option

Use sprites from other generations in a remake of gold and silver isn´t nostalgic ... I think it's an insult to everyone who played those versions, and only can create problems

that's a bit harsh :\

I get what you're saying but you have to understand that 3d only gives you quality if you give it quality. the same could be said for 2d but we already have quality sprites for all items, including pokeballs. if nilllzz had a bunch of 3d artists on the payroll and a team of level designers the game could have been a AAA quality 3d remake of gold/silver. unfortunately the reality is there's a single 18 year old german man working on this with a few offsiders helping out.

the game he has made isn't going to be winning awards for graphics but he has come up with a very reasonable approach to porting g/s over into a 3d world. The textures for the 3d parts are easily sourced from screenshots of g/s and the character sprites from hg/ss (the g/s ones are far too low-res) and the idle animations for pokemon can come from gifs on a wiki. There's still a lot of heavy lifting to do mapping things up, and there is potential to improve areas a bit with the 3d capabilities of the engine, but going the whole hog would mean a LOT of work.

sometimes you have a choice between having some thing on your hard drive no one will ever see or care about that will never be finished or a shipped game. i think nilllzz made the sensible choice here. I'm sorry if you aren't happy with the graphics but unless you want to make a lot of 3d models for nilllzz there isn't much chance we're going to see less billboard sprites in this game. The sprites offer ready made professional, high quality 2d art. I'd rather that than low quality 3d art, which is all we will get unless there are pros on the books (its a non commercial game so good luck with that, crowdsourcing the money for that would make kolben a larger target for litigation by ninty)

something that might help, there is another pokemon 3d, made by amateur hobbyists afaik, this is what happens when you don't throw money at 3d
*shudders* i'll have the sprites, thanks
