Mostly rare stuff, heart scale, deep sea scale, any items in the grotto at 5% or less, stones aside from the basic fire leaf etc...

He got the Safari Balls by giving them to his pokemon and leaving. Cheaper and stronger than Pokeballs, take back six per trip and enjoy the game!

You could trade with someone back and forth and get a lot more than 6 balls.

You could get your pokemon fully healed in the Elite Four without items by trading.
You could even use five different teams, one per elite four member!
