After I had beaten the fist gym in violet city, I walked to the pokemon center and saw a man who worked with professor Elm and he gave me the egg. After I got the egg my game crashed.

Did you happen to accidently speak to Professor Elm's Aide twice? That is a known crash, and this seems very similar to it.
Try it again but be sure not to speak with the Aide again.
