How functional is the friendship mechanic right now?

Do walking around and leveling up increase friendship right? Just wondering whether I'll be able to evolve my Golbat yet.

My eevee evolved into espeon, so I think it works correctly.

At the moment I'm trying to evolve a Golbat. Does it work for this too? Or just eevees?

I'm not sure. But I remember getting hearts and smiley faces when talking to my eevee right before she evolved if that helps?

I've been getting hearts and smiley faces since level 37 it's not level 40 so :/

I did a little research and found that on this board: http://pokemon3d.net/threads/2948/#post-29785, Darkfire says that the evolution for golbat to crobat works, so just keep up the good work and you'll get it eventually. If not, you should report it as a bug I think?
