I Have had this happen and I think I know why (or at least part of the problem) you can still move and I think he follows all I know is i turned around and then walked through him when I just wanted to talk to him
I had changed my mind about saving at that point when i got into a wild pokemon battle after that I went to talk to him to turn him around and get the battle underway it crashed (no wonder).
Funny thing is it worked for me before but I went back to before I beat him for a couple of reasons (mostly to train up a tiny little bit) I'm fixing it now just thought the extra info might be useful.
