decided to visit prof.elm and on the table there are 2 pokeballs, should there only be 1 because your rival steals one?

It does happen. Also, with different people in the same room, there might be different poké balls in the table for each person, shown differently on each PC, if the 2 people got 2 different pokémons.
Funny, huh?
