Benefits of co-op

So I got a Hamachi server set up and I've been goofing around with my friend for the past couple minutes (and forgive me if it's the wrong topic), but what exactly is there to do in co-op as far as the update goes and if possible, when's the next update going to possibly open more options for co-op?
