I just pressed the pokeball on the main menu to see what it did and it crashed

I don't know exactly what that pokeball is for, but it seems it was implemented into the main menu but has for the time being nothing linked to it. My guess is that it was accidently put there too early.

The pokeball is for content packs
at the bottom of this forum are a bunch of content packs that can be downloaded that replace the content of the game
you can download them and put them in your content packs folder which is in the pokemon folder which will be in the same place as your launcher
the game crashes if you click the pokeball and there is no content pack so either don't click it or download a content pack

Maybe next update Nilllzz could fix so that it does not crash, but perhaps show a text box saying : You have no content packs, and then some link to where it could be downloaded.
