I am so confused as to what I'm supposed to do there after I free the old guy. I really want to explore it more but its a pain in the butt going in and out of the ruins. Can someone please explain what I need to do here?

Once you free the old man, you earn the achievement and finish the puzzle, nothing else to do there.

If you saved the old man, that means you already completed the puzzles.

That is accessible through an alternate exit through the Union Cave.

Other than that battle, there's nothing else to do in the Ruins of Alph.

erm....if you have really saved the old man, then you must have walked past that psychic, so...please, elaborate, what do you mean by "saved the old man".

I went in to the ruins forced my way though the walls killed the unknowns saved the old man.

no I went through the wall and turn left and got inside. I can do this in any mode.
